A car that is fitted with an automatic transmission has a number of special parts, designed to make the driver's work much easier. Fundamentally, the system needs to disconnect the engine from the transmission when the vehicle comes to a halt, and select the right gear for the appropriate condition. One part, in particular, is crucial when it comes to choosing those gears, and it must be kept in good condition to avoid issues. What do you need to know, therefore, about the transmission modulator valve?

Regulating Speed

In order to determine the correct gear for the situation at any given time, the automatic gearbox must be able to read information from the engine. In some cases, a special valve connects the intake manifold of the engine to the gearbox through a vacuum hose, and it's able to adjust the gearbox according to the speed of the engine.

Valve Location

Typically, this modulator valve is found towards the rear of the transmission case and must be serviced from time to time to make sure that it remains in good condition. If it becomes faulty, then it will not be able to control how fluid is passed through various chambers within the transmission in order to select the right gear.

What to Check

You should also ensure that the transmission pump is checked at the same time as the valve so that the right amount of lubrication is maintained within the valve body and the box itself. If not, metal components could interact with each other, leading to a buildup of unwanted metal debris.

Problems Ahead

Sometimes, debris can build up to such an extent that it will cause a blockage within the structure of the box. If this should happen, it will cause fluctuating pressure, and this will make it difficult for the transmission to shift into the appropriate gear. Furthermore, the entire system will tend to overheat, and this will inevitably lead to a major failure.

Service Time

When you next take your vehicle in for a service, make sure that they check the condition of the transmission modulator valve. They'll need to have a look at the fluid to see if is still capable of providing protection and inspect the o-rings that connect the vacuum hose to the valve itself. Remember, this is a job that is best left to a professional, as the valve can be difficult to locate, and special tools may be required.
