The electrical system in your car is essential to keep it working properly. While the car may depend on fuel to keep going, the electrical system helps to start the engine while maintaining power, illuminating the lights, and powering any of the vehicle's peripherals.

If the electrical system goes out suddenly, you will be stuck with a dead engine and unable to drive. There are a couple of signs that you can be on the lookout for that indicate serious issues with your car's electrical system and require immediate professional attention to keep this scenario from happening.

1.  You Notice a Burning Plastic Odour When You Turn on the Car's Heater

One sign that indicates a problem with your car's electrical system can be detected when you turn on the heater. As soon as or shortly after switching on the heat, you may start to smell an odour that resembles that of burning plastic.

If you smell this odour, this typically means that there is an electrical short in the system. As the electricity arcs, it burns the plastic wire coating and connectors, which creates the smell. As soon as you detect this odour, you need to have a professional inspect the electrical system to find the short.

2.  You Hear a Clicking Noise While Having Problems Starting the Engine

Another sign that indicates a problem with your vehicle's electrical system is when you start having issues with starting the engine. The engine will become slow to turn over, and you will start to hear a clicking noise while it is attempting to do so.

If you hear this clicking noise, this means that the starter is not getting enough power to work. This issue could be caused by a faulty alternator, a failing battery, or a break in the electrical wiring. You will need to have a professional determine the cause before you are completely unable to start your car.

Along with having difficulty starting your vehicle while hearing a clicking noise and detecting a burning odour whenever you turn on the heater, you may also notice that your headlamps and interior lights dim whenever there is an increased demand for power. If you notice any signs of an issue with the electrical system, you need to have it fixed as soon as possible. Take your car to a shop that offers auto electrical repair services to have them fully inspect the system so that they may take any necessary actions to remedy the problem.
