5 Common 4WD Repairs
Like all vehicles, four-wheel drive cars need repairs from time to time. Here are a few of the most commonly required 4WD repairs.
1. Tyre Replacement
Tyres are usually the first part of a 4WD vehicle to wear out. You can expect to need to replace your tyres every couple of years or more often if you drive your vehicle over rough ground, potholes or kerbs, all of which can lead to tyres wearing out faster.
2. Brake Repairs
Having a set of brakes that are in perfect condition is essential for vehicle safety. The most common cause of malfunctioning brakes is wear and tear on the brake pads and brake discs. Replacing these components can allow your 4WD to function safely again. Be sure to have your vehicle serviced regularly so you can be sure that the brakes are working well.
3. Battery Replacement
All cars include a battery, which provides an ignition spark to get the engine going. If your car battery is empty of charge, you will not be able to start your 4WD without the assistance of another vehicle and jumper cables. Over time, batteries lose their ability to hold charge, which can lead to you ending up stranded when the battery fails. Check the battery light on the dashboard to see how well your battery is able to hold charge. If you notice that the battery is often low, take the 4WD to a mechanic to let them take a look.
4. Suspension Repairs
Many 4WD owners drive their vehicles off-road or along rough tracks that require the vehicle suspension to do a lot of work. After many miles of absorbing the shocks caused by potholes and stony ground, a 4WD suspension system can wear out, leading to an uncomfortable ride and the car beginning to handle in a strange way. As soon as you notice the suspension feeling off, take your 4WD to a mechanic so they can fix the wear and tear.
5. Tyre Pressure Monitoring System
Most 4WD vehicles include a tyre pressure monitoring system, which alerts the driver to potentially dangerous changes in tyre pressure. However, this system can sometimes fail, causing the tyre pressure warning light to come on even when there is no problem with the tyre pressure. TPMS repairs are usually quite straightforward, as the mechanic simply needs to change the tyre pressure sensor to make the system functional again.
